Bio: Karsten Giese is a senior research fellow at GIGA and editor of the Journal of Current Chinese Affairs (JCCA) working on three linked projects: West African Traders as Translators Between Chinese and African Urban Modernities; Chinese Entrepreneurial Migrants in Urban West Africa—Sociocultural Impacts of Intercultural Interaction; and Ethnic Migrant Workers in China—Perspectives of Poverty Reduction, Socioeconomic Development, Sociocultural Change, and Individual Exploitation (planning stage). He has served as editor of the Journal of Current Chinese Affairs (formerly CHINA aktuell) since 2005, and has also worked in the past as an interpreter and translator of Chinese. He received his PhD in Modern China Studies at Free University of Berlin; MA in Modern China Studies at Free University of Berlin; MA in translation/interpretation of Chinese at Humboldt University of Berlin.
